It was an expectation of fragility — all jewelry was to be delicate; all colors were to be calm. There were to be no hints of wild possibilities. All elements were instead to be simple, mirroring modern sensibilities and minimalistic trends. Accessories were treated as after-thoughts, meant to complement but never to dazzle. Attentions were to be given to clothes; and nothing beyond fabric was to matter. It was an age of sweet (but ultimately futile) necklaces and rings. It was a demand for meek lines and apologetic style.
And now… that is all changing.
Accessories were once defined to simplicity. In 2011, however, they are going to be reshaped entirely — with the conventions of size and color completely defied.
Bold necklaces, large bracelets, chunky rings: these are to be expected for the year. International designers have grown tired of weak chains and have chosen instead to favor Bohemian stylings. Layers of beads, metallic bracers and even feather ear-rings are all being used — with such legendary fashion houses as Stefano Pilati, Gucci and Moschino leading the way. All outfits are to be offered drama and this isn’t simply to be found in fabrics. It’s instead to be proven in jewelry (as well as belts, bags, glasses and even hats). Bigger truly is better: this is the philosophy.
All must — of course — note the theatricality of this trend. While runways may support an excess of accessories, day to day obligations may become overwhelmed by them. It becomes important therefore to choose all items carefully. Create an impact through a single large item, drawing attention from others (but not mockery). Be certain that the pieces are appropriate for all elements of your life as well: career choices will not be identical to evening wear. Be practical with what you select. That will make enjoying it a far easier thing.
Be bold. Be fashionable.
