Lace and Luxury

It’s a season of easy tones. It’s a time of expected style. Spring arrives and forever offers traditional patterns and hues, the bold textures. The world of fashion becomes defined by common colors — and it’s all too simple to discount the months entirely. All know what to anticipate. All know what to plan for. The trends are predictable and seem never to change.

In 2011, however, they are.

Spring is proving itself to be more than just an excuse for color. It’s instead discovering its romantic sensibilities — with many international designers choosing to take advantage of lace. This material (too often deemed antiquated, thought to offer no modern style) was a frequent guest upon the runways of Fashion Week; and its  appearance provided a welcomed contrast to the usual fare.

Spanish house Balenciaga (named after founder Cristóbal Balenciaga) offered guests lush gowns and delicate weaves. London favorite Christopher Kane dazzled with lace accents and classic silhouettes. And even American legend Ralph Lauren offered his own version of this fabric — hearkening back to the Victorian age with an abundance of ruffles and dramatic cuts. The effect was astounding and could not be denied.

And, for those seeking to spice their days with theatricality, this trend could prove to be ideal — assuming the correct tone is chosen. Avoid lace that has been tinged yellow or ivory. These hues tend to appear dated in most lighting and will flatter very few individuals. Select instead pristine fabrics (bright, white and easy). Remember also that these pieces work well as supplements — and can be used to great effect in small doses.

Spring is no longer a time for mere color. It’s instead time for romance.
