The Denim Demand

Fabric — you’ve decided — is a fiend. Linen becomes the proof of wrinkles; hemp suggests a too green sensibility. Silk clings; lace tears. It’s a battle to find cloth that won’t suffer from your day to day routines (the constant duties of motherhood, the demands of a career: you are forever moving and forever frustrated by how… easily your wardrobe fails you). And, as spring approaches, you begin to wince: anticipating the too delicate choices designers will offer, the weaves that will fray so quickly. It’s certain to be another disastrous season and you’re despising it already.

You don’t have to — because a new trend is emerging and it will offer relief.

Natural fibers are ideal for the modern woman. They provide breathability and comfort, will follow the body’s natural curve. And none are better proof of this than denim. Too often, however, is this fabric assumed to be limited to jeans. No other clothing can be crafted from it, it’s believed.

Such a belief was shown to be incorrect at this year’s Fashion Week.

Denim was showcased within many collections and the runway never seemed more causal — or more unexpected. Tunics, skirts, shirt-dresses, coats and more were all shaped from this fabric; and many designers chose to feature it as their main attraction. Belgian artist Dries Van  Noten provided tailored trousers, trendy jackets and billowing tops. American favorite Derek Lam wowed London with his trench coats, coveralls and business suits. And British designer Stella McCartney hearkened back to the 1980’s: utilizing broader shoulders and sweeping sleeves. The looks were varied but the results were spectacular.

Women are now demanding more than mere fashion — they’re instead seeking to accessorize their lives, proving their good sense (and better style) through every choice they make. This is not always an easy task, however. Many designs lack the functionality needed to survive hectic days. Choosing denim, though, allows this to be accomplished: the fibers are stronger; the cuts are structured; and the look is easy.

It’s a reward without compromise. It’s a trend without flaw. Use it to your advantage.
